Human Body Systems

Course Description

Students examine the interactions of body systems as they explore identity, communication, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis. Students design experiments, investigate the structures and functions of the human body, and use data acquisition software to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and respiration. Exploring science in action, students build organs and tissues on a skeletal manikin, work through interesting real world cases and often play the role of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries.

Unit 1

Notebooks

Students are required to keep and maintain a notebook for this class. The notebook should be a three ring binder with pockets in the front and back. No textbook is required. This makes it imperative that you organize your handouts, notes, activities, and assignments in your binder. This material will become reference frequently.

Late Work

I do not accept late work. If there are individual circumstances that prevent a student from submitting their assignment on time, I will deal with that situation independently. Please come and speak with me privately if you have an issue with a late assignment.

Grading Scale

You will earn points in four categories, each of which forms a percentage of your grade.

Attendance

In order for you to learn, you must be present. The expectation is that you are in the classroom, willing and ready to learn each day. This class is fun but it is also challenging. If you miss class, you will get behind which ultimately causes you more work. Each day in class you earn 4 possible points. To earn the full 4 points, you must be present in class, on time, prepared, and an active participant. If you are absent, tardy, forget your textbook, off task, etc . . . . . you lose points. School sponsored absences will count as missed days – BUT you have a chance of making up those points!

Notes

This class will rely heavily on your ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form. As an upper level science course, little patience is given to those who do not complete tasks. Many days, you will be working independently on a long-term project. It is your responsibility to manage your time.

This class can prove to be exciting, enthralling, and a lot of hard work. However, I am here to help each and every one of you. I will do my best to make this year as enjoyable, fun, interesting, and exciting for all students. I am here to help each and every one of you succeed and to reach your highest potential. Just remember, education is a two way street. I can only do so much on my own, and ultimately some of the responsibility falls on yourself to seek extra help if you need it, ask questions if you are confused, or perhaps to seek an extra challenge.

If you have access to a personal computer, I strongly encourage you to bring the device to class. We will utilize technology frequently.

You will NOT need to use personal data plans to access the internet. FREE WIFI (filtered) is provided through the school.
